The 26th High Times Cannabis Cup 2013 Amsterdam

The High Times Cannabis Cup was first started in 1987 by Steven Hagar and since then it is held annually every November in Amsterdam Netherlands. The cup is held with the purpose of identifying the best plant/seed in specific categories: Coffeshop Flowers, Neder Hash, Import Hash, Seed Company Indica, Seed Company Sativa, Seed Company Hybrid, Seed Company Hash, CBD Flowers, CBD Concentrate, Best Booth, Best Product and Best Glass. The cup is held over 5 days and is accompanied every night by a concert. This year the cup was at The Amsterdam Roest which was the same venue as last year but bigger.

So What Happens At The Expo?

Well there is 2 aisles and a seminar room both aisles consist of booths selling various products ranging from t-shirts, posters, CBD oil, hemp produced products, seeds, vapourisers and of course 1 or 2 cannabis booths. So if you was thinking its just a place full of stoned pot heads you are very mistaken! The seminar room covered topics such as “Cannabis: Evolution and Ethnobotany”, “New Recreational Laws” and author Doug Fine read from his book “Too High To Fail: Cannabis and the New Green Economic Revolution”. On the 3rd and 4th day at the expo is when the voting polls open for holders of a judges pass to go and cast their vote in all sections of the cup electronically.

The expo is daily from 1pm to 5pm and is a 20 minute journey from Amsterdam Central however if you have the extra corn for a Judges Pass you will be entitled to free transportation on one of the many Canna-Bus shuttles and before you ask yes smoking is permitted on the canna-bus.

Evening Concerts At The Melkweg

This is the venue for the concerts and is about 20 minutes from Amsterdam Square, the performers on the bill where Jehst, Black The Ripper, DJ IQ, DJ Nekstwon, Killer Mike & EL-P, Cam’ron, Smif N Wessun, The Wailers and The Dirty Soul Rockers. Entry to The Melkweg is free for judges pass holders every night and €24 without. I was privileged to see Smif N Wessun deliver a proper set that would not have cost €24 !

So How Much Does It Cost?

Daily entry to the expo is €50 so getting a judges pass actually works out in your favour unless you have no need to attend every day. At least with the pass you have the option of free transportation as a taxi from Amsterdam Central will cost in the region of €20-€30. 27 coffee shops had at least one entry of some kind in the past you would have received free samples of cup entries but times are hard so little goodie bags are offered (lighter, rizla, book of roaches that type of stuff). Some coffee shops had their cup entry only available to purchase by people who have a judges pass so there are perks to having a judges pass.
